Names such as άλφα, βήτα, γάμμα help with spelling, but reading depends on the sound a letter has inside a word. Modern Greek β is a voiced fricative rather than English b, δ resembles the sound in “this,” and θ resembles the sound in “think.” γ and χ change quality before front vowels.

In contemporary standard pronunciation, ι, η, υ, ει, οι and υι can represent /i/. The combination αι commonly represents /e/, while ου represents /u/. Do not try to preserve an Ancient Greek distinction in everyday Modern Greek unless a specialist historical course is your goal.

The combinations μπ, ντ and γκ/γγ can represent voiced stop-like sounds, with pronunciation affected by word position and speaker. τσ and τζ form common affricates. Learn each pattern through whole words and short recordings instead of inventing a permanent English respelling.

Most words with more than one syllable display an acute accent over the stressed vowel. Stress belongs to the word and can distinguish meanings or grammatical forms, so store it from the beginning. Read νερό, Ελλάδα and άνθρωπος with the marked syllable prominent rather than treating the accent as decoration.
